Fisher Wins Operation Driver Excellence Competition

Congratulations to Chaz Fisher of Hudson, N.H. who won top honors in the New Hampshire Operation Driver Excellence Competition on May 19. He received a $500. savings bond and a $250. cash award. Andrew Tupaj of Littleton, N.H. won the second prize of a $250. savings bond and $200. cash. Third prize was a $100. savings bond and $100 cash which was awarded to Adam Thayer of Grafton, N.H. David Aubin of Littleton won the fourth prize of a $50. savings bond and $50. cash. In addition to the cash prizes, the finalists received trophies recognizing their achievements.

As the school who taught the champion, Hampshire Driving School, L.L.C. will receive the Michael Doucette Memorial Trophy for one year. The first school to win this trophy for three years will retain permanent possession of it.

The four winners competed against other driver education students for the title of "New Hampshire's Safest Teenage Driver." They were scored on a comprehensive, written test based on general information about driving, safe driving attitudes and other traffic related problems. All contestants were top performers from their schools. After the written test, the students moved to a road test given by a licensing examiner from the N.H. Department of Safety. The students were scored on their skill in handling a car in traffic and general driving skills and habits. After the road test, the students moved to the off-road course which is designed to demonstrate handling a car in emergency situations.

Fisher's driver education instructor was Alan Nowicki from Hampshire Driving School, L.L.C., in Nashua. Tupaj and Aubin were taught by Gary Mason from Littleton High School. Thayer was a student of Dan Cunningham of Mascoma Valley Regional High School.
